Have you kissed your geek today?

As usual, skip to the second paragraph after this intro for the review.  I do invite you to stay though.

If you read my previous post, nicely perched below this one, you’ll know that I was watching this movie not too long ago.  I am a proud geek.  I have never shied from it.  There is a difference between nerds, dorks, and geeks.  A brief description is called for in my opinion.  A nerd is otherwise a bookworm.  Very smart, always doing homework and socially awkward.  Mom usually dresses them, but they make excellent tutors and will more than likely be your boss or be wealthy.  See Bill Gates.  A dork is usually not that smart and very annoying.  They think they are cool, but most people wish they’d go away.  Think of Elliot from the recent version of Bedazzled.  And of course my beloved geeks.  Most of us are fairly intelligent, but usually excel at one particular thing.  Technology is usually a major interest.  We are knowledgeable about things like comic books, movies(usually Sci-Fi), gadgets, and spend a lot of time on the InterWebs.  We are, however, more socially accepted.  It’s usually because we are handy at fixing your computer.  And luckily, for me and my fellow geeks, we have become more and more accepted.  It comes to bare because Fanboys is VERY much a geek movie.  I’m sure if any of you are the Jock type that made my life hell in high school, you’ll still think of this as silly and pathetic.  But to those that know the difference between geeks, nerds, and dorks will know what I mean.

The bad.  Not much is bad about this movie.  It may be because I am a fan of Star Wars, but the jokes and references never got old, FOR ME.  I could, however, see how the casual movie watcher would find it to be too much, but that’s IF they get all the jokes at all.  I’ll have to check back if I find anything else the next ten times I see it over the next 3 or 4 days.  Believe that.

The good.  Great fanboy movie.  The Star Wars zealots will LOVE this.  It has it all.  The references are endless.  I am so tempted to list a few, but i don’t wanna ruin it for any one that hasn’t seen it.  I will say this, Look for the PIMPEST line from Star Wars, or any movie, to be used by the actress it was said to in Star Wars.  I’m just saying.  Which brings me to another thing I loved about it, it has cameos galore.  Seth Rogan plays two characters in it.  William Shatner a.k.a. Capt Kirk.  Billy Dee Williams a.k.a. Lando Calrissian.  Carrie Fisher a.k.a. Princess Leia.  Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes a.k.a. Jay and Silent Bob.  Even Ray Park a.k.a. Darth Maul.  The one thing that I liked the most, I have to say, was the story.  Yes, it is a comedy about Star Wars fanboys.  BUT…. it has a very touching subplot about a rekindled friendship in the face of tragedy.  It is subtle enough not bum you out the whole ride, but it gives it a nice touching feel making it a real movie and not just a laughfest.

Sad ending, but if you’ve ever been blessed with good friends, you’ll appreciate this flik.  And if not, then just laugh at the Star Wars goodness.  Definitely worth watching.

This IS the Droid we’re looking for…

LMAO, I just HAD to throw in that Star Wars joke considering that I paused my first viewing of Fanboys.  And, by the way, it is VERY funny so far.  A must watch for Star Wars fans.  Or even if you know Star Wars pretty well.  But I digress.  So I’m sitting here watching Fanboys and I get a Gmail push notification on my iPhone.  Too much info?  Wait and see why it’s relevant.  It’s an email from someone asking me what I think of the new Droid from Verizon.  I must admit I had briefly heard of a Google phone coming out for Verizon, but never followed up on it.  So I looked in to it right now and I have to say, I am looking forward to this.  I saw and tinkered with a G1 from T-Mobile a while back and it was alright.  Not bad for Google’s introduction to the cell phone world, but nothing that would make me sell my iPhone.  And for those that don’t know, I LOOOOVE my iPhone.  I am NOT, however, such a fanboy(see tha tie in there), that I am blinded to the potential in other smart phones.  Let’s check it out.

The first thing that jumps out at me is the design.  It is not ugly, but it doesn’t have the sexiness of the iPhone.  That might not be fair, considering that Apple prides itself in making their products aesthetically pleasing.  And to be honest, it’s a phone.  It is not a fashion accessory.  Maybe to most women, but it’s not meant to be.  The other thing was the full keyboard.  I have gotten soooo used to my virtual keyboard, that an actual keyboard seems so old-fashioned… TO ME.  But I see how this could be good.  There are plenty of iPhone users that have stated that a real keyboard would be a good thing to have.  As I was watching THIS presentation, I was thinking, “This looks pretty cool, but the App Store is the major advantage that iPhone has.”  Then I got the part where they mention the “thousands” of apps available for it.  Hmmm?  Could this be a true contender to the iPhone Empire?

As for the advantages of the Droid, I saw a few.  For one the screen is bigger than the iPhone.  Yes, I know it’s only 3.7 compared to 3.5, but ask your girlfriend and trust me size does matter.  The camera is 5MP compared to iPhone’s 3MP.  I take a lot of pix with my phone.  I don’t even carry a digital camera anymore.  This would be awesome.  Granted, megapixels are not the only thing to consider when taking pictures, but a few sources have compared the two phones’ picture taking capabilities and the Droid holds up very well.  There are apps available for the Droid.  Will they be GOOD apps?  We’ll have to see.  It may not eliminate the Apple’s advantage all together, but it does put Android in a good position to level the playing field.  Something is better than nothing.  Also, multitasking.  I got my paws on a Palm Pre a few months back for a few minutes, and that’s one thing that did impress me about it.  The Droid does this as well.  I’ve wished for this capability on the iPhone.  It is a little annoying having to relaunch a previous app just because I checked my email or clicked on a link.  And last but certainly not least, the Droid will support Adobe Flash.   Yes, ladies and geeks, FLASH.  Not a big deal to some, but to geeks like me, this is a HUGE.  Now we can really enjoy surfing the MobileWeb.  And yes, fanboys(there it is again), the iPhone OS is MobileWeb 2.0, deal with it.  Hulu, here we come.  I will say this.  Do NOT be surprised if Apple announces soon that they too will be supporting Flash.  It only makes sense and I will thank Verizon, Google, Droid, whomever… for this wonderful break through.

Will I go get a Droid any time soon?  Probably not.  But if I get my grubby little paws on one(hit me up Verizon, Google), and the user interface is more fluid than other touch screens, you never know.  I tried a Voyager or Venus, I can’t remember which, but the touch screen was horrendous.  Considering that I had better coverage with Verizon than I do with AT&T, and I find it ridiculous that I’m pay extra JUST because it’s an iPhone… I might take a serious look at jumping ship.  Likely?  Probably not, but you never know.

P.P.

I am totally serious about reviewing this phone for Verizon and Google.  I am a life long geek and I will be honest.  Pretty please?  *bats eyes*

It’s Trick ‘r’ Treat time, kiddies…

It’s that time of year again, when all the ghouls and goblins come out to play.  I personally have made it a point to be very vigilant while surfing the net around this time of year, cause one of the things I hate the most, is those stupid pix or vidz that start off all calm and soothing and then play some loud scream sound clip and flash a picture of the exorcist or some crap.  I HATE IT!  Like I tell my wife about ten times a day around Halloween(poor darling), I like scary stuff, but I hate being startled.  Which is why I refuse to go see Paranormal Activity.  We did however get our paws on two movies recently.  The First one we saw was Drag Me to Hell.  I won’t go too deep in to that one, but it was good.  Sam Raimi is a good director, as seen in Spider Man and the Evil Dead series.  It had a couple startling moments, but overall it was fun and creepy.  Worth a watch, if only for the season.  But the one I really liked was Trick ‘r’ Treat.  This gem went straight to DVD, released on October 6.  Let’s get in to it, shall we.

The bad.  I can see why they may have decided to release it straight to DVD.  I think a lot of critics and movie goers would have dissected it unfairly and seriously crippled the overall opinion of this movie.  Other than that, I don;t have much to complain about.

The good.  I LOVED this movie.  It was well directed and well acted.  You get Dylan Baker from Across the Universe and the Spider Man movies.  Brian Cox from Troy and X-Men 2.  Anna Paquin from Almost Famous and that silly show called True Blood(Twilight with slightly more substance).  The movie has a Tarantino feel to it, as they jump between 4 stories but they all intertwine.  All the stories are nice and creepy.  And none of that jump out and startle you crap, either.  I got the feeling watching it like when I was a kid watching Tales From the Dark Side.  I loved it.  And that little big-headed kid was SCARY.

If you haven’t checked it out, go get it and watch Saturday night after the kids have stopped mooching candy from ya.  It’s worth a watch.

Apple: Putting everything on the Tablet

The rumors of a Mac tablet have apparently been circulating the Interwebs for a minute now.  I only heard about it fairly recently.  I became interested in the idea when I did hear of it.  I’ve seen other tablets and liked the idea, but saw no real use for them, personally.  I could definitely see a secretary or maybe college students using this to its full potential, but not an everyday user like me.  But when I saw more details about this Mac tablet, I was a little more intrigued at the idea.  I figured it’ll basically be an iPhone on steroids.  then I saw THIS link and THIS link, with more details.  Unconfirmed, of course.  And so, I REALLY started thinking.

I have found that I have become a pawn in the Apple marketing game.  I am a sucker for anything Apple.  I have had numerous iPods.  I have owned two Macbooks, my current 13″ MBP and my old 13″ MB which is now my wife’s.  I am trying very hard to put myself in a position to get rid of my desktop PC altogether and get a Mac Mini, or preferably an iMac.  And I actually considered getting the Apple TV.  Luckily I did not.  I even noticed recently that I have also become a bit of an Apple/Tech snob.  When I hear about people getting Mac computers or iPhones, even if just considering them, I actually try to convince them not to.  Like if some how they will not use it to its full potential.  When I caught myself, I thought, “What, like I do?  Where am I getting off dictating how other people should spend their money.”  I’ll still give my opinion when asked.  Unless the person uses the computer as much as I do, they really don’t need to spend the money associated with Macs.  The average user can get a good PC, AND maintain it for a mere $600 and be perfectly fine.  Interwebs, homework, multimedia, maybe even some budgeting.  But for someone like me, I am constantly re-encoding music and videos.  Editing movies and pictures, among other computer tinkering.  And all that strain caused me to be reinstalling my operating system almost every 4 or 5 months due to bugs and errors.  I don’t have that problem with my Macbook.  But the average user won’t experience that unless they fail to maintain it properly.

The reason I went in to that diatribe is to stress how iffy this tablet seems to me now.  Like I said, I went out and got this 13″ MBP.  I made it a point to get the iPhone 3GS.  And I was already thinking of ways to get the tablet when it comes out.  But once I saw the details, albeit just rumors, I realized how silly I was being.  This really will be a HUGE iPhone 3GS.  Supposedly running the exact OS that the iPhone does.  Meaning it will not be a full OS X.  It is going to take the iPhone experience to a new level.  But come on, are you really gonna carry this thing around.  At 10.7 inches, reportedly, it will be easier to carry than a notebook.  Essentially it’ll be like ripping the screen off the keyboard of a netbook, and carrying just the screen around.  Pretty cool, huh?  BUT… if it isn’t a full computer, what are the advantages?  If you need a full computer you can just carry you’re notebook computer like I do.  If you just need simple accessibility on the go, you have your iPhone or Blackberry, like I do.  The next step will be just carrying your Apple tablet, which will have a SIM card.  So it will BE your phone as well.  Just leave it in its case and use the bluetooth headset to answer your calls.  Which will tell you who’s calling so you don’t have to look at the caller ID.  Sounds pretty cool huh?  But what about when you go clubbing or on a date?  Are you really gonna lug this thing around?  I might, cause I’m a geek and that’s how I roll.  But the everyday consumer isn’t going to bother with these things.  They’ll stick to their cell phones and notebooks separately and be perfectly happy.  So I fail to see how Apple is gonna market this.  That being said, they are masters at it.  Every new iPods come out with slight differences from the last one, and yet still cause a frenzy every time.  Same for the iPhone, same for the Macbooks, and same for the iMacs.  And all this while remaining considerably expensive.

If in fact it does make a splash, I agree that print media will be looking to get in on the action.  Something like this will be so easy to carry around and let you read your periodicals anywhere.  Look for major newspapers and magazines to start offering subscription downloads for the Apple tablet.  And not to mention the death of the kindle.  At least as we now know it.  This thing has a lot of potential if done right, and although it will be pricey, if any one can pull it off, Steve Jobs and Apple can.
