Apple: Putting everything on the Tablet

The rumors of a Mac tablet have apparently been circulating the Interwebs for a minute now.  I only heard about it fairly recently.  I became interested in the idea when I did hear of it.  I’ve seen other tablets and liked the idea, but saw no real use for them, personally.  I could definitely see a secretary or maybe college students using this to its full potential, but not an everyday user like me.  But when I saw more details about this Mac tablet, I was a little more intrigued at the idea.  I figured it’ll basically be an iPhone on steroids.  then I saw THIS link and THIS link, with more details.  Unconfirmed, of course.  And so, I REALLY started thinking.

I have found that I have become a pawn in the Apple marketing game.  I am a sucker for anything Apple.  I have had numerous iPods.  I have owned two Macbooks, my current 13″ MBP and my old 13″ MB which is now my wife’s.  I am trying very hard to put myself in a position to get rid of my desktop PC altogether and get a Mac Mini, or preferably an iMac.  And I actually considered getting the Apple TV.  Luckily I did not.  I even noticed recently that I have also become a bit of an Apple/Tech snob.  When I hear about people getting Mac computers or iPhones, even if just considering them, I actually try to convince them not to.  Like if some how they will not use it to its full potential.  When I caught myself, I thought, “What, like I do?  Where am I getting off dictating how other people should spend their money.”  I’ll still give my opinion when asked.  Unless the person uses the computer as much as I do, they really don’t need to spend the money associated with Macs.  The average user can get a good PC, AND maintain it for a mere $600 and be perfectly fine.  Interwebs, homework, multimedia, maybe even some budgeting.  But for someone like me, I am constantly re-encoding music and videos.  Editing movies and pictures, among other computer tinkering.  And all that strain caused me to be reinstalling my operating system almost every 4 or 5 months due to bugs and errors.  I don’t have that problem with my Macbook.  But the average user won’t experience that unless they fail to maintain it properly.

The reason I went in to that diatribe is to stress how iffy this tablet seems to me now.  Like I said, I went out and got this 13″ MBP.  I made it a point to get the iPhone 3GS.  And I was already thinking of ways to get the tablet when it comes out.  But once I saw the details, albeit just rumors, I realized how silly I was being.  This really will be a HUGE iPhone 3GS.  Supposedly running the exact OS that the iPhone does.  Meaning it will not be a full OS X.  It is going to take the iPhone experience to a new level.  But come on, are you really gonna carry this thing around.  At 10.7 inches, reportedly, it will be easier to carry than a notebook.  Essentially it’ll be like ripping the screen off the keyboard of a netbook, and carrying just the screen around.  Pretty cool, huh?  BUT… if it isn’t a full computer, what are the advantages?  If you need a full computer you can just carry you’re notebook computer like I do.  If you just need simple accessibility on the go, you have your iPhone or Blackberry, like I do.  The next step will be just carrying your Apple tablet, which will have a SIM card.  So it will BE your phone as well.  Just leave it in its case and use the bluetooth headset to answer your calls.  Which will tell you who’s calling so you don’t have to look at the caller ID.  Sounds pretty cool huh?  But what about when you go clubbing or on a date?  Are you really gonna lug this thing around?  I might, cause I’m a geek and that’s how I roll.  But the everyday consumer isn’t going to bother with these things.  They’ll stick to their cell phones and notebooks separately and be perfectly happy.  So I fail to see how Apple is gonna market this.  That being said, they are masters at it.  Every new iPods come out with slight differences from the last one, and yet still cause a frenzy every time.  Same for the iPhone, same for the Macbooks, and same for the iMacs.  And all this while remaining considerably expensive.

If in fact it does make a splash, I agree that print media will be looking to get in on the action.  Something like this will be so easy to carry around and let you read your periodicals anywhere.  Look for major newspapers and magazines to start offering subscription downloads for the Apple tablet.  And not to mention the death of the kindle.  At least as we now know it.  This thing has a lot of potential if done right, and although it will be pricey, if any one can pull it off, Steve Jobs and Apple can.

We pushed and pushed, now… Gmail Pushes back

This one will be short and sweet.  It pretty much speaks for itself.

I have been waiting and waiting for Gmail to be able to push to my iPhone.  I know it may seem silly to most of you.  Especially you Blackberries out there who already get push.  But this is sadly a big deal for us iPhone peeps.  I mean Google releases this AND AT&T is releasing MMS later today, Sept 25th?  Great day for iPhone fans.  Like I said, I know most of you have this already and I agree that it is a little late for the “greatest phone on the planet”.  I will say to those being nice about it, I agree… touché… and I concede your point.  To those more cynical and crude about it, I say this… We may not have had push for our Gmail nor MMS, but can you choose from over 72,000, that’s right seventy two THOUSAND apps for your phone?  Do you have an iPod integrated IN your phone?  Do you have the closest thing you can get to a REAL web browser on a handheld device on your phone?  I didn’t think so.  And that’s a short list of things the iPhone does better than any other cell phone.

If you have more than one Gmail like I do, this only supports one account at this time.  But you can get an app from the App Store called PushGmail and that’ll give you one more.  Supposedly PushGmail will be adding “multiple accounts” capability soon.  Enjoy.

Please note, he isn’t very clear about contacts and calendar.  It will ask you if you wan to t overwrite or leave your current info on your phone.  Just to be safe go in after setting it up and slide the bar.  It’ll ask what you want to do with your current info.  ;)

If you have a crappy cell phone say “i”phone…

OK, I plan for this to be a short one but knowing me it probably won’t be.  So as some of you may, or may not know, I have had some issues with the iPhone as of late.  I even went as far as to go on to eBay and look for a Blackberry Pearl 8120(for the WiFi) with the plan to activate it, unlock my iPhone, and sell it for a profit.  Yes, that’s how peeved I am at Apple/AT&T.  My problem is that, although, as I’ve said, the iPhone is an extraordinary mobile device, it is not the greatest “phone”.  It does “other” things great.  The number of apps you can get are endless, so to speak, and can be very useful or just plain fun.  But as for the basic cell phone features that we have gotten used to over the years, this thing is horrible.

The fundamental… phone.  I drop calls left and right.  The sound over the earpiece and the speaker is horrible.  The headset is no better.  And since the 3.0 update, even my non-Apple headset sounds crappy.  SMS leaves much to be desired.  I HAVE to see everything in conversation mode, and forwarding and landscape barely became available with 3.0.  Speaking of barely, it took 3 generations of hardware and software to get MMS and we STILL can’t use it.  I managed to get it working for a week or two(don’t ask cause I honestly can’t remember exactly how) and I can tell you it’s not the greatest.  These are things that a cell phone in this day and age should do flawlessly.  The iPhone falls way short.  And the other major problem I have that finally pushed me over the edge, so to speak, was video.  The only selling points for the 3GS were the speed and the video.  There are some other smaller features, but nothing earth shattering.  But like I said the video got me.  I KNOW, for a fact, that the 3G is fully “capable” of doing video.  There are a couple of apps through Cydia(Jailbreak) that allow video to be taken.  The down side of course is that it is not legit to use.  I also KNOW that jailbreak can make the iPhone a little choppy and buggy.  But my question is, why should I pay money AND extend a contract I am desperate to get out of, just to have video?

I have been told that AT&T is the evil doer here and not Apple.  But I blame both.  Because at the end of the day, even IF AT&T has severely dropped the ball with it’s lack of preparation, Apple is still to blame as well because they signed the exclusivity deal with AT&T.  Does Apple have a great device?  Ab… so… lutely.  Do they also have a mediocre(at best) cell phone?  Ab.. so… freaking… lutely.  I sincerely hope that Apple forgoes it’s exclusivity with AT&T, goes with Verion, and takes a serious look at the “PHONE” features of the iPhone.  I will say that I love my iPhone.  But loving something does not mean I have to sit by and just accept it’s flaws.  As a consumer I have every right to demand that my money get me what I deserve.  Customer Service has gone out the window, fallen 40 stories, and broken each and every bone in its body… in three places.  But that doesn’t mean we can’t fight back.  The iPhone may be a meager example, but this world, and more importantly this country, has become complacent.  People, and companies are getting the attitude of take it or leave.  As for the country, love it or leave it.  I say BS to both.  I have every right to love my country and it’s products and services, and complain if it’s not what I believe it shoud be.  I expect the best out this country and every American.  And if we can’t even stand up and demand satisfaction with something as abitrary as a cell phone, how do we ever expect to improve the United States of America?

P.P.

Luckily a good friend of mine had a Blackberry Pearl lying around and let me handle it.  And I will report that I am STILL an iPhone user.  Although the HTC Fuze is looking MIIIIIGHTY tempting.  LoL.

How do you stop a cell phone from charging?

Take away it’s credit card?  No.  At this point in the advancement of technology, it seems that even taking away it’s power cord won’t stop it.  For us iPhoners, there’s THIS.  That’s right.  A simple charging pad.  Put it by your door, walk in the house and set your phone down with your keys, on the pad of course, and you’re charging.  Ready to go out, pick it up and it’s charged.  No more messing with the cable.  You know it’s happened.  You want to charge your iPhone, but you last used the cable to sync your music.  So you have to go allll the way to the computer room to get the cable, find the adapter, and plug it in.  No more cable.

Now hold your horses.  You may be saying, “But that still limits you to a specific area.  I still have to get up if the phone rings.  Then set it back in the same place.”  Au contraire.  Reportedly, THIS is in the future.  Now you can charge when ever, where ever.  Now those radio waves will be sucked in to the phone instead of our bodies.  All kidding aside, I love technology and this only makes it deeper.  The only thing is I wouldn’t be surprised if companies get together and offer up a huge check to keep this technology in the vault.  Unless of course Nokia sells the tech to Duracel, Energizer and the like, and they all make their own models.

Imagine harnessing this tech and then WiFi being available everywhere… I can take my Maccy(Macbook) any where at any time and write my lovely posts.  How cool would that be?

Locked in a cell… contract

So here’s my first real post.  Let’s hope it goes well.

So, the iPhone 3GS came out today.  I’ve been seeing online, mostly Twitter, that people are happy as clams with their new toy.  I, myself, did not get one and yes it had to do with the surcharge.  If I had pushed a little harder, I think I could’ve gotten some help from a rep at one of my local AT&T stores but I thought hard and I decided not to get one.

First off, it’s too expensive.  I mean, if you’re upgrading from the original iPhone, it’s not too bad.  But if you are mid contract, with a 3G like me, it’ll cost an additional $200 on top of the $199 to upgrade, PLUS $18 just for upgrading.  Also, I am currently paying $90 extra dollars, JUST because I have an iPhone.  Now, let’s say your rebuttal is that I’d still have to pay for a data plan with any other smart phone.  OK, that’s like maybe $20?  That means my wife and I pay $40.  OK.  So I go from paying $90/month to $50/month right.  That’s still $600 a year, JUST for the privilege of saying that I have an iPhone.  Really?

Now let’s look at the device itself.  We get Cut, Copy and Paste!  We should have had it with the first gen.  We get landscape!  We should have had it with the first gen.  We get Universal Search!  We should have had it with the first gen.  And of course, we get MMS.   Not only should we have gotten it with the first gen, but that’s some thing the FREE phones have had since forever for crying out loud.  But the MMS isn’t even complete.  If I want to share my niece looking cute while dancing around, I can’t because there’s NO VIDEO.  Oh, others get it with the 3GS, but not us 3G people.  Not with 3.0.  Why the heck not?!  I know for a fact that it has the capability.  Jailbreak proved that.  So is that how you get people to shell out $399.  Offer them better speed, and make video exclusive to the 3GS?

In the end, I did buy an iPhone 3G last year, so I did it to myself and shouldn’t really complain.  But trust me, if this exclusivity ends next year along with my contract, I will NOT be renewing with AT&T.  I may take my iPhone elsewhere if possible.  Or I may even forget about the iPhone all-together and just get another phone.  It’s like I tell people when they ask me about the iPhone.  “If you want a SUPER cool mobile device that is also an “OK” phone, the iPhone is for you.  If you want a GOOD or GREAT phone that does other things “OK”, go with another smart phone other than the iPhone.  The iPhone is just a way of not having to carry your crappy FREE cell phone and iPod Touch.  Just carry your iPhone and save pocket/purse space.”

P.S.

I wrote this all out on the iPhone I can’t live without.  LOL  </joke>

P.P.S.

Please remember to comment.  I love feedback, of all kinds.
